2005 Union County Heritage Grant ProgramSponsored byP.A.S.T. of Union County in cooperation with the Union County Kiwanis Club
Thanks to a fundraising effort of the Kiwanis Club's Barbecue sales program in January 2003, P.A.S.T. of Union County has the opportunity to offer a grant program to assist Union County schools including public, private, or home school associations in teaching history as it relates to Union County.
The purpose of the program is to encourage or assist the teaching of Union County history and/or regional, national or world history as it relates to Union County and create the beginning of an archive for future reference for researchers of Union County history. The grant moneys would be used for projects relating to Union County and its history. These grants are to be applied for at least 30 days in advance. Review for acceptance and/or recommendations for modifications will be done during the first week of each month. Grant moneys should be used during the school year of the application. The awards will be in $25.00 increments up to a maximum of $100.00. The teacher may use the funds at his or her discretion but the intended use should be stated in the grant application. Some possible uses could be to help fund the project or event, purchase materials to aid in teaching local history, or provide incentives for the students. However, use of funds is not limited to these three areas. Funds are limited so consideration for projects will be in the order that the proposals are received. A short application form should be submitted prior to the project or event. After committee review, grants will be awarded on an ongoing basis. When the project or event is completed, copies of the reports, photos, projects or events along with a brief report and evaluation of the project will be submitted to P.A.S.T. for their research archive and possible publication either on the web site or in the newsletter. Digitized copies are requested. A copy of the lesson plans, resources or bibliographies as a curriculum resource will be submitted as well for the research archive. P.A.S.T. is excited to be able to offer this opportunity to our county's schools. This program would not have been possible without the efforts of the Union County Kiwanis Club. We gratefully acknowledge their support of our educational project. We are also indebted to the educators who were willing to meet with us and offer their suggestions and ideas as to how best to encourage the teaching of Union County history and to Byron Dodd of Taylor Dodd and Wood who was the underwriter for these meetings. The hope is that this opportunity will enhance the ability of Union County educators to teach about Union County and its heritage. Rita Dodd and Carla Smith are the co-chairs of this Educational Outreach Committee for P.A.S.T. If you have questions about this project or would like to be involved in future P.A.S.T. Educational Outreach Projects or any other P.A.S.T. project, please contact us.
